Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) gave a House floor speech Tuesday night attacking President Trump for his continued belief the 2020 presidential election was stolen from him, once again blaming Trump for the January 6 riot at the Capitol and accusing him of trying to steal the election. Cheney spoke on the eve of a vote Wednesday by House Republicans to remove her from the number three position of GOP House leadership, Conference Chair. Republicans in the chamber walked out on Cheney as she rose to speak, save for Rep. Ken Buck (R-CO).

Cheney said of Trump, “…God has blessed America, Mr. Speaker, but our freedom only survives if we protect it, if we honor our oath, taken before God in this chamber to support and defend the Constitution, if we recognize threats to out freedom when they arise. Today we face a threat our nation has never seen before. A former president, who provoked a violent attack on this Capitol in an effort to steal the election, has resumed his aggressive effort to convince Americans that the election was stolen from him. He risks inciting further violence. Millions of Americans have been misled by the former President. They have heard only his words, but not the truth as he continues to undermine our democratic process. Sowing seeds of doubt about whether democracy really works at all…”

Cheney spoke to an empty chamber, reported CNN’s Annie Grayer, “Ken Buck is the only lawmaker watching Liz Cheney speak on the House floor. The rest cleared out.”

Never Trump Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) posted his support for Cheney after her speech, “This is leadership. This is integrity. This is Liz Cheney. And I’m damn proud to support her.”

CNN’s Manu Raju briefly spoke to Cheney after her speech, “After her remarks I asked Liz Cheney if she were referring to Kevin McCarthy when she called out leaders for not standing up for the rule of law and for allowing democracy to be undermined. “I think my remarks speak for themselves, they’re pretty clear about what’s happening.”
